James Edward Chapman

James Edward Chapman, 92, born September 7, 1920 and departed this life May 9, 2013 at his home in Pembroke, Virginia. Deacon Chapman was a longstanding, faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Pembroke, Virginia, serving as Deacon for many years. He worked faithfully in his church doing whatever needed to be done, always with a servant spirit. He was retired from the Celanese Plant at Narrows with many years service, was a member of Pembroke Ruritan Club, and American Legion Post No. 311 in Pembroke. He was a veteran of the U S Army in WW II.

Deacon Chapman will be sorely missed in the community. He was a sweet, kind and humble man who had a great love for God. He was one who was sincere and genuine in his expressions of love to everyone. He would often say “I love everybody”, and we know he spoke the truth.

Deacon Chapman was preceded in death by his parents Kempet and Maude Elizabeth Slash Chapman; his beloved wife Mary Frances Casey Chapman; two brothers and five sisters, John and Lawrence Chapman, Mable Wilson, Lillian and Elizabeth Chapman, Rosie King, and Glenna Dickerson.

He leaves to cherish his memory his two daughters Mary Murray of Pembroke, Virginia who cared for him during his entire illness, and Regina Patterson of Rancho Cordova, California; his eight grandchildren Mark Chapman, Mason and Marvin Murray whom he looked on as his sons, Pam, Carl, Brian, Lisa, and Renita; his eighteen great-grandchildren; his three great-great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law Oretha Anderson and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 pm in the First Baptist Church, Chapman Avenue in Pembroke with Pastor James Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg with military honor guard and services furnished by American Legion Posts No. 311 in Pembroke, No. 68 in Narrows, No. 145 in Peterstown and VFW Post 6000 in Narrows. The family will receive friends at the church Sunday evening from 6 until 8 pm. The Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke is in charge of the arrangements.
