Clifford Irving Fitzsimmons, of Blacksburg, and formerly of Fairfax, Va., died eight days short of his 87th birthday on June 10, 2012, with members of his family by his side. The son of the late Ferne Scofield Gembol and Clifford Glenor Fitzsimmons, Cliff was born and raised in Columbus, Neb. After graduating from Kramer High School, Class of 1943, he enrolled in the Army Air Corps, serving until after World War II in 1946 when he was Honorably Discharged. He attended Northwestern University on the GI Bill. Cliff combined his love of facts and knowledge with his outgoing personality to become a top sales representative in the greater Washington, D.C. area with Munsingwear and later in his career at Colony House Furniture.
Cliff married Margaret Adams in 1953 (later divorced) and is survived by their five children, Fred and partner, Jill Balleh, of Boca Raton, Fla., Rick of Fairfax, Va., Connie and husband, Andy Dolloff, of Blacksburg, Va., Kathi and husband, Rob deLorimier, of Clifton, Va., and Sheri and husband, David Barthol, of Midlothian, Va.; along with 15 grandchildren. Also surviving him are his beloved Lillian, and her family of Williamsburg, Va.
The family wishes to express thanks and appreciation to the staff of Heritage Hall in Blacksburg, who loyally cared for Cliff for the four years preceding his death. You are too many to name individually but to all, thank you for providing a safe, loving environment-and cheese sandwiches and lemon pie after hours!
At Cliff's request, there will be no public services. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Kendall Funeral Home of Pembroke, Va.
