Julia Madeline Martin

Julia Madeline Meredith Martin, 85, of Pembroke passed away on June 11, 2012. She was born on October 18, 1926 in Goodwin’s Ferry, VA, a daughter of the late Albert Meredith and Iona Tempest Vaught Meredith. She was lovingly known as “Matsy” to her siblings. Madeline married William Donald Martin of Pembroke in 1947 and lived in Pearisburg, VA. Prior to her marriage in 1947, she won the Miss Giles County contest . Madeline and Donald moved to Pembroke, VA in 1954, which became their lifelong home. She became a member of Pembroke First United Methodist Church in 1954 and remained a member there throughout her life. Madeline was active in all aspects of her church, including as a Sunday School teacher and as president of the United Methodist Women’s group at PFUMC. She was also active for many years in organizing her class reunions for her beloved Newport Class of 1944. Madeline’s first jobs were working for Poston’s Drug Store in Pearisburg and for The Savoy Shop (Witten’s) in Pearisburg. Madeline was a long-time employee of the Williams family, working at both Williams’ Clothing Store and the Pembroke Pharmacy. She retired in 1994 from Pembroke Hometown Pharmacy after being diagnosed with colon cancer. Madeline was always a woman of great faith and loved her church, her family and her home. She took great pride in keeping a beautiful & peaceful home and beautiful flowers. She had a special and great love for her grandsons, Cris and Russ as their “Maw Maw”. Madeline was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Donald; her brother and sister-in-law Albert Cecil and Reba Meredith; her sisters and brother-in-law Anna Bell M. and Warren D. Williams, Gladys Donaline M. Williams, Carolyn M. McMahan, infant sister Janet Marie Meredith; sister-in-law Dolly Akers Meredith and brother-in-law Martin E. Wright. Madeline is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Donna Carole and W.R. Johnston, Jr. of Pearisburg, VA and Celia Ann and Jay Hardwick of Blacksburg, VA; grandsons and “granddaughters” Cris and Melissa Hardwick of Fredericksburg, VA and Russ and Brenda Johnston of Encinitas, CA; great grandchildren Jacob Dylan and Aiden Thomas Hardwick of Fredericksburg, VA and Kiera Giselle Johnston and Baby Boy Johnston (due 11/12) of Encinitas, CA. Madeline is also survived by her brothers Ellis Daniel Meredith of Christiansburg and Allen Leon Meredith of Newport; her sisters and brothers-in-law Alberta M. Wright of Christiansburg, VA, Shirley M. Perdue of Marion, VA , Bernice M. and Thomas D. Frith, Jr. of Blacksburg, Gloria M. and Ronald Davidson of Christiansburg and many nieces and nephews. In her last four years, Madeline’s health declined due to the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, so she left her home and relocated to Riverview Nursing and Rehab Center in Rich Creek, VA. The family would like to thank Dr. Kenneth Walker and all the staff of Riverview Nursing and Rehab Center for their kindness and wonderful care during Madeline’s time there. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 16th, 2012 at 11:00 am in Pembroke First United Methodist Church with Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Interment will follow at Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, VA. Visitation will be at Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke on Friday, June 15th from 6 PM to 8 PM.
