Amos Elmore Perkins

Amos Elmore Perkins, 81 of Pembroke, left his earthly home surrounded by his family and arrived in Heaven on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg. Amos was born on May 16, 1930 in Ripplemead, VA and was raised on Guinea Mountain. His parents are the late Maggie Riggs and Robert Lee Perkins. Amos was preceded in death by two sisters Gertrude and Elsie and nine brothers Eugene, Courtland, Edward, Johnny, Robert (Junior), Herbert, Carroll and Clarence (Buddy). He married the love of his life, June Tabor, on May 3, 1950.

He is survived by one sister Leoma Perkins Rock and his wife of nearly 62 years, June Perkins, and sons Wayne and wife Linda Perkins, David and wife Barbara Perkins, and grandsons Derek, Kevin and Brandon. Amos was a lifetime member of the Christian Faith. He started out attending the Mt View Methodist on Guinea Mountain with many fond memories. He then attended Castle Rock Baptist Church in Pembroke where in the past he served as deacon and caretaker of the church. Amos worked and retired from the Giles County Public School System. In his younger days he was an avid rabbit and squirrel hunter and raised beagle hunting dogs. He was a hard worker often working two jobs to give his family a better life. He traveled most of the US, but as he would say, “I don’t want to go, I just go with June”.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10:00 am in the Castle Rock Baptist Church in Pembroke with the Rev. Fed Austin and the Rev. Gary Poff officiating. Burial will follow in the Anderson-Mt. View Cemetery on Guinea Mountain. The family will receive friends at the church Friday evening from 6 until 8 pm. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Anderson-Mt View Cemetery in care of Dixie Albert, 2526 Guinea Mountain Road, Pearisburg, VA 24134. Funeral arrangements are with the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke. Online condolences may be sent by visiting kendallfuneralhome.com.
