Berlin Eugene Lafon, 92, of Newport, departed this life Monday morning, October 10, 2011 at the home of his daughter Betty and in the care of his devoted family. “Gene” was born on February 4, 1919 at Kire, Virginia, a son of the late Leonard Jackson and Mary Blanche Martin Lafon. He was a member since his youth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was a retired crane operator at Virginia Lime Co., and as a young man served in the CCC Camps.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife Frances Sexton Lafon; his son and daughter-in-law Edwin Eugene and Jean Lafon of Newport; his daughters and son-in-law Betty Lou Lafon of Christiansburg, Judy Sue and Charles Hager of Dublin; his sister Audrey Lafon Woods of Christiansburg; his five grandchildren; and his six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 2:00 pm in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Pembroke Virginia Stake Center in Pembroke. Burial will follow in the Kire Community Cemetery at Kire. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the services. The family would like to extend heart-felt gratitude to Carilion Hospice and all the others who helped make Genes final days better.
