Cherokee Mona Merrix

Cherokee Mona (Sister Cherry) Merrix, 89, of Pearisburg and formerly of Goldbond, departed this life for her heavenly home Friday morning, April 29, 2011 at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg. Born at Kerns (now Goldbond) on March 11, 1922, she was a daughter of the late John Campbell and Gracie Snider Williams. For over sixty-four years “Sister Cherry” labored the harvest of souls in frequent evangelistic meetings and as Pastor of the Goldbond Gospel Tabernacle. In later years she had joined in worship with Shaver Memorial Church in Pearisburg. Her great joy other than preaching the Gospel was to open her home to visiting preachers, missionaries, and all the local saints so that she could cook up her wonderful meals and see them all eat to their content. She took great pride in being an “old time Holiness Lady”. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Emmitt Merrix, and her brothers John, Bill, Kenneth, Albert, and Curtis Williams.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter and son-in-law Lenna Sue (Judy) and Arnold Radford of Pembroke; her son and daughter-in-law Melvin and Melinda Merrix of Pembroke; her brother and sister-in-law Harry and Edith Williams of Pearisburg; her sister Helen Spiker of Missouri; her grandchildren Gene and Sherry Merrix, Timmy and DeDee Merrix, Missy and Billy Basham, Amy Jo and Phillip Wheeler, P J Merrix, Casey Merrix, Michael Merrix, Steven and Kathy Radford, Erica and Scott Rowland; her great-grandchildren Serena Radford, Martin Radford, Amber Gravely, Cody Rowland, Chloe Wheeler, Blake Basham, Bentley Merrix, Caleb Clark, Gabrielle Merrix, Logan Merrix, Brittany Morris, Levi Morris.

The family would like to extend their heart-felt gratitude to the staff at Giles Community Hospital and Riverview Nursing Home especially nurses Debbie, Angie Wiley, April Blankenship and Sherry Archer.
