Howard Edwin Barnett, 78, of Sinking Creek Road at Pembroke departed this life Monday morning, June 9, 2008 at Radford Health and Rehabilitation Center in Radford. Born in McCoy on September 15, 1929, he was a son of the late Charles William and Margie Vaught Barnett. He, with his wife, was the owner and operator of H&L Mini Mart (Barnett’s Store) ,Eggleston Springs Park and Campground, and was retired from Celanese Celco Plant at Narrows with over fifty-four years service. He was a veteran of the U S Army, Korean Conflict , was a member of the VFW, and had served on the board of Pembroke Telephone Co-operative. Howard was active in the Eggleston Masonic Lodge No. 309 AF& AM having served as Master, a member of the Shrine, Kazim Temple, a member of Scottish Rite, and a member of Pearis Chapter of The Order of The Eastern Star having served several times as Worthy Patron. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Harry Barnett and “Buddy” Walter William Barnett and a sister Maxine Lambert.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Louise B. Barnett; his daughter and son-in-law Kathy B. and Howard Mills of Christiansburg; three grandchildren David and Rebecca Ratcliff, Sherry and James Brown, Sandra and Gregory Van Nest; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters Margaret Smith of Pembroke, Betty Snider of Christiansburg, Katherine Nolan of Christiansburg.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 10:00 AM in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with Pastor Bill Sleasman and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg where military graveside services will be rendered by Giles Co. American Legion and VFW posts.
