James Doak Lucas, 85, of Clover Hollow, Newport, departed this life Sunday March 30, 2008 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Blacksburg. He was preceded in death by his parents Luther L. and Sarah Rose Doak Lucas, his stepmother Thelma Z. Lucas, and a brother William H. Lucas of Blacksburg.
He is survived by his loving and caring wife of sixty years, Alva Johnston Lucas; a son and daughter-in-law Jim and Gail Lucas of Newport; daughter and son-in-law Martha and Bob Neil of Roanoke; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law James and Bobbie Johnston of Roanoke, Frances Allen of Pearisburg, Frances Lucas of Virginia Beach and Carolyn Johnston of Blacksburg; grandchildren and spouses and great-grandchildren Jason, Cherron and Hannah Lucas of Newport; Wes, Kristen and Caden Lucas of Anchorage, Alaska; Sarah and Michael Hartley of Tallahassee, Florida; Amber and Shawn Misenheimer of Charlotte, NC; and Rob and Alison Neil of Charlottesville.
Doak was a life-long member of the Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church, being a charter member of Newport First Christian Church. He was also a charter member of Newport Ruritan Club and the United Fund of Giles County. Doak was on the Board of Directors off The Bank of Giles County, Pulaski-Giles Insurance Company and was a leader in numerous other civic and farm organizations. He was a good husband and father, grandfather and great-grandfather; he was very content tilling the soil of the family farm, while quietly helping his church and community.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 2:00 PM in The Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens of The New River Valley at Blacksburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from Noon until 1:45 before the services. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Newport First Christian Church, The Alzheimers Research Foundation or to a favorite charity in Doak’s memory.
