Dr. Roger Alton Teekell

Dr. Roger Alton Teekell, 77, of Stevers Gap Trail in Newport departed this life Thursday morning, April 12, 2007 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Born March 3, 1930 he was a son of the late James Harvey and Ada Smith Teekell. Born and raised on a farm near Elmer, Louisiana he later served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U S Air Force and subsequently earned his PhD. at LSU with a double major in Biochemistry and Animal Nutrition. While raising his children he and his wife coached girls softball, he served as a Scout Master for several years, and he was very active in the Optimist Club youth activities, serving for a time as a Vice-President of Optimist International. As Professor, Department Chair and Dean at VPI and at LSU, he directed research projects and authored numerous scientific publications. While at LSU he was Acting Dean of The College of Agriculture and Chairman of the Poultry Science Department. At VPI he served as Chairman of the Poultry Science Department and then as Dean of the Graduate School. He was blessed to spend his retirement in Craig County as a cattle farmer with his beloved wife. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son James Delaney Teekell and a brother Roy Eugene Teekell.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Helena Delaney Teekell; a son, George Thomas Teekell, Esq. of San Francisco, CA; two daughters, Dr. Gwen Marie Teekell of Las Vegas, NM and Dr. Leah Teekell-Taylor of Tampa, FL; a son-in-law Dr. Marc Taylor, also of Tampa, FL; two granddaughters, Kiersten Taylor and Allyson Taylor, undergraduates at Yale and Harvard, respectively; and a brother, Arlis Earl Teekell of Denair, CA.

Memorial services will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Sunday, April 15, at the First Christian Church of Newport, 115 Rose Road, Newport, Virginia. Pastor Roger Henderson will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to The Building Fund of the First Christian Church of Newport. The Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke is serving the Teekell family.
