“Say not in grief he is no more – but live in thankfulness that he was”
Russell Lee Link, 88, of Newport departed this life on Friday, August 25, 2017 in Blacksburg, VA surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Loudoun, TN on April 17, 1929 a son of the late Ernest L. and Etta Viar Link.
Russell’s was a life well lived. He grew up on the family farm in Plowscrew where he learned the value of an honest day’s work. Those early years on the farm shaped his character and instilled in him a love of the land, family, and community. He was a devoted son, a protective big brother, a loving husband and father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. He was always a loyal friend and neighbor. He was always there when needed and was the first to offer a helping hand. He called when loved ones were sick, offered advice when asked and was interested in the everyday events of their lives. He was always eager to share colorful stores about people he had met and places he had been. It is hard to imagine a world without him.
He was a veteran of the US Army and proud of his service in the Korean War where he earned a Purple Heart. Russell was a pipefitter by trade and worked many years for various mechanical contractors. He retired from the Celanese Corp at Narrows, was a graduate of Newport High School Class of 1946, and a life- long member of Sherry Memorial Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Reba Hutchison Link, and his daughter Debra Link Porterfield.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son and daughter-in-law Darrell Lee and Teresa Eaton Link; his grandsons Joshua Lee Link and wife Tracy and Jared Porterfield, and great-grandson Sawyer Lee Link. He also leaves two brothers, Allen Link (Eleanor) and David Link (Doris) and his devoted and loving sisters Beulah Link Epling and Jean Link Porterfield. A special cousin Bobby Breen, sister-in-law Dorothy H Price, son-in-law Wayne Porterfield, several cousins and a host of nieces and nephews.
