Elsie Barnett Stephens, 90, of Pearisburg, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on August 11, 2017 while in the care of Warm Hearth Village (Kroontje Health Care Unit) in Blacksburg, VA after a courageous battle with dementia. Elsie was born in Pembroke, VA on July 21, 1927. She was the daughter if the late George and Florence Barnett. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Joseph R. Stephens, Sr., three half brothers, Carrol, Preston, and Roy Barnett and half-sister Nora Lee Lang, brother Glenn (Pete) Barnett and sisters Mary Evans, Louise Barnett, Ruth Ann Reynolds and baby sister Shirley Ann Barnett.
She is survived by two sons Joseph R Stephens Jr and wife Carolyn, and Randy Stephens. Three grandchildren, Ursula Lee, Erich Stephens Heather Stranger, six great-grandchildren, Dalton Lee and Wyatt Lee, R J Perkins, Keila Perkins, Trey Lawrence and four great-great-grandchildren Jector, Emmilia, Roy Jr., Aubrey, two sisters Virginia Pratt and Christine (Peggy) Short and husband Ennis, two brothers Bobby Barnett and wife Peggy and Jimmy Barnett and wife Rita, in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
Elsie was a member of the Green Valley United Methodist Church. She was retired from the Celanese Corp. Elsie was a very humble and loving person who was always willing to help others in their time of need. She was dearly loved by all and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1:00 pm in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow Street, Pembroke with burial following in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral two hours before the services.
