GARY FRANKLIN THORNHILL, 68, of Buchanan Street, Pearisburg, departed this life Saturday,March 25, 2017 at his home in the loving care of his family and hospice. Born in Pearisburg on October 31, 1948, he was a son of the late Paul Clifford “Dick” and Gertrude Beatrice Perkins Thornhill. Gary was a devoted member of Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead, was retired from VDOT as a superintendent with over 38 years service, was a member of the 1968 graduating class at Giles High School, a member of Pearisburg Moose Lodge, and was a lifetime member of the Giles County Rescue Squad where he had served as Captain for two years. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Paul “Bud”, Chester and Roy Thornhill and his sisters Gladys Anderson, Frances Stout and a set of twins born to he and his wife, John and Julie Thornhill.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife of 48 years Linda Suttle Thornhill; his son and daughter-in-law Michael Franklin and Carrie Thornhill of Pearisburg; his daughter Melissa Ranae Blankenship of Pearisburg; his most beloved treasures his granddaughters Ashley Thornhill, Camber Thornhill, Kynslee Blankenship and Ellie Blankenship; his sisters Ann T. Suttle of Pembroke and Leatha Jones and her husband Donald of Pembroke; and his loyal companion Tipper (his dog) for 20 years; and many more loving nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to those who helped care for Gary during his illness; Good Samaritan Hospice, Gentiva Home Health and Rehab, Reba and Louie special care givers and a special Thank You to Dr. McMahan, Dr. Walker, and Dr. Lewis.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 pm in Riverview Baptist Church, Big Stony Creek Road in Ripplemead with Pastor Shahn Wilburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Anderson Cemetery at Mt View on Guinea Mt. Road. The family will receive friends at the church Monday evening from 5 until 8 pm.The family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Riverview Baptist Church.
