Bernice Elaine Stiff Martin, of the Maybrook and Newport communities of Giles County, passed away in the early morning hours of January 15, 2015 at the Radford Rehabilitation Center. Her 96th birthday was to have been on February 18th. She was a painter of nature scenes, especially of birds, played guitar and a number of musical instruments, and was the last survivor of the twelve children of Elmer Burrell Stiff and Dora Durham Stiff who lived on a mountain farm in Maybrook. She had been an employee at the “Central Office” of the old Pembroke Mutual Telephone Company, Williams Department Store in Pembroke, and S. H., Heironimus in Blacksburg. She was a member of the Lucas Memorial Christian Church in Maybrook.
She was the widow of the late Paul A. Martin; and the mother of Dr. Douglas Martin and his wife Donna of Newport; Darrel Martin and his wife Marie of Newport. She is also survived by grandchildren Perry Martin and his wife Christina; David Martin, Laura Martin, and Erin Martin; and by great-grandchildren Dabney and Della Martin, and many nieces and nephews.
The family asks those who honor her memory to feed the birds in winter time. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 pm in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke, with burial following in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.
