Delorous Rader Porterfield

She lived by her motto, “One Day At A Time”

Delorous Rader Porterfield, 80, of Newport, departed this life Sunday evening, November 23, 2014 at the home of her son in Blacksburg. Born in Pembroke on September 27, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Bruce and Maggie Wood Rader. Delorous was gifted with an angelic singing voice that she used to cheer and inspire others in spite of her own pain, discomforts and failing health. Delorous expressed her Christian Faith as a devoted member of the Newport-Mt Olivet United Methodist Church in Newport. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Corey Blake Porterfield, her brothers Dodrell and Dolan, her sisters Donetta, Dorthalene, and Dolly.

She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 61 years, Wendell Porterfield; her son and daughter-in-law Mike and Lisa Porterfield of Blacksburg; her daughter and son-in-law Tracie and Greg Smith of Maybrook; her grandchildren Jarod, Jordan, Ashley (Jr.) and Trey; her great-grandchildren Katlyn, Kandice, and Rowdy; her last sibling, her brother Darrell Rader of Rockville, MD, her many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends and her special caregiver Frances Horton.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:00 pm in the Newport-Mt Olivet United Methodist Church in Newport with Pastor, The Rev. Morris Fleischer, officiating, and Doug Martin, Eulogist. The family will receive friends at the church from 11 am until 1 pm before the services. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Newport-Mt Olivet United Methodist Church, 311 Blue Grass Trail, Newport, VA 24128.
