John George Kinney, Sr., 87, of Narrows, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday morning, September 14th, 2014. He was born on October 12th, 1926 at Whitman, West Virginia and was a son of the late Rudolph H. and Nora Epling Kinney.
He was a member of VFW Post 6000, and served in the U S Navy in the Pacific during World War II. In 1954, he and his wife Betty opened a small drive-in restaurant between Narrows and Pearisburg, Virginia on Rt. 100 called “Kinney’s Drive-in”. During this time they made many friends and their customers were like family, making wonderful memories through the years that will never be forgotten. “Kinney’s Drive-in” remained open until 1998 when John and Betty retired.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Deloris Maynard and Lucile Steele. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Phillips Kinney; a son and daughter-in-law John Jr. and Eleanor Blevins Kinney; many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He also leaves behind his pet companions, Thomas and Miss Kitty.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 am in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin with military honor guard by VFW Post 6000, American Legion Posts 311, 68, and 145.There will be no public viewing in keeping with John’s request. The family would like to request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Veterans Memorial Park “Honor Wall” in Narrows; the Giles County Bible Bus Fund or to any Humane Society organization at any location. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital Cardiology Unit , their efforts were greatly appreciated.
