Carmen Lee Sumpter, 78, of Floyd and originally from Giles County departed this life Tuesday morning, August 26, 2014 at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, after a long illness. Born at Kerns on Big Stony Creek in Giles County on December 21, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Swanson G. and Luvenia Brumfield Sanders. A Christian woman of faith, Carmen lead a useful and busy life; as a member and Sunday School Teacher at Beaver Creek Church of The Brethren, as a teacher after her college experience in a private school, as an employee of AT&T and Hubble Lighting, as a poet, and pianist, and filling her space with joy and love. She was preceded in death by her brothers Dewey and Curtis Sanders and her parents.
She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband Morris Wayne Sumpter; her daughter Susan Niday of Charlotte, NC; her sister Kakie Strickland of Goldbond; and several cherished nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 pm in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke with Pastor Shahn Wilburn and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Thursday evening from 6 until 8 pm.
