On the morning of July 15, 2014, James Alexander (Alex) Freeman, age 80, of Eggleston, VA quietly and in the presence of his family closed his eyes to his earthly home at Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg. Born on May 19, 1934, James was one of four children born to the late Lawrence and Clara Banks Freeman. His sister, Ethel Mae Parks and an infant son Timothy preceded him in death.
James was born in Giles County, VA but later made his home in Christiansburg, VA where he met the late Betty Anne Thomas. Their four remaining children mourn his passing: Peggy Burkes of Blacksburg, VA, Patty and Elroy Eaves of Dublin, VA, James “Jimmy” Freeman of Radford, VA, and Clara Sue Freeman of Christiansburg; along with his sister and brother-in-law Estelle and James Summers of Pembroke, VA; his brother Clarence Freeman of Roanoke, VA; his six grandsons, one granddaughter and five great-grandchildren; his cousins Clara Mae Twine and Virginia McEnhimer who will cherish his memory; a host of nieces and nephews and friends, especially his buddies Charles Eaves, Lonnie Freeman and Larry Williams who will cherish the time they had with him.
He was a member of Goodwill Church of God in Christ at Eggleston, VA where he loved cleaning the church each week. Special thanks goes to Dr. Bennett and the nursing staff of Giles Community Hospital for their compassionate care of James. The staff of Heritage Hall in Rich Creek will be remembered fondly as well.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 12:00 pm in The Goodwill Church of God in Christ, Eggleston, with The Rev. Dr. Clinton Scott, Pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the services. Burial will follow in the family cemetery on Hoges Orchard Dr. in Hoges Chapel.
