William Lee Long, 87, of Greenbrier Ridge Lane, Newport, departed this life Monday morning, April 21, 2014 at Lewis-Gale Montgomery Hospital in Blacksburg after a short illness. Born in Goodwins Ferry on February 7, 1927, he was a son of the late Charles French and Ethel Sarah Lytton Long. He was a veteran of the U S Army WWII; for many years a trucker and always a farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Stella Dove Long, his son Marshall Dowdy, and his sisters Allie Marie Boyd and Reba Williams.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter and son-in-law Debra and Joe Spears of Newport; his son and daughter-in-law Roy Lee and Phyllis Dowdy of Roanoke; his daughter-in-law Janet Dowdy of Newport; his dear friend Betsy Link of Newport; his six grandchildren; his numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1:00 pm in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke with Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6 until 8 pm.
