Donald Frank Ricker

DONALD FRANK RICKER, 82, Wilderness Drive, Pembroke, departed this life Good Friday morning, April 14, 2017 at his home in the loving care of his family and hospice. Born in Boston, MA on August 30, 1934, he was a son of the late Karl P. and Ruth Cutler Ricker. He was a First Lieutenant in the U S Army Reserves. Don taught at Christian High School in Cambridge, MA (now Lexington Christian Academy in Lexington, MA) and Franklin Junior High (now Franklin Middle School) in Wheaton, IL. In the summers he was the Camping Counselor at Camp Brookwoods in NH and then the director of Camp Pineridge in Rumney, NH. In 1967 he went to Ethiopia to teach at Bingham Academy, a school for missionary children run by SIM in Addis Ababa until 1999. During that period, he was seconded to AIM to teach at Rift Valley Academy in Kenya for four years. In 2000, he moved with his family to Giles County, Virginia and became a member of the fellowship at Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead. Don was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Guy Winchester Ricker.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Mary Hoeldtke Ricker; his sons and daughters-in-law Jonathan Karl and Lidia Legesse Ricker of Sterling, VA and Timothy William and Deborah Tegegnwork Ricker of Pembroke; his daughters and sons-in-law Ruth Ellen and Martin Fisher of Hurt, VA, Elizabeth Ann and Jamie Kabernick of Asheville, NC and Melody Joy and Levelle Windsor of Hillsville, VA; his twenty-five grandchildren, his three great-grandchildren; and a host of students whose successes were blessed by his teaching.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 22, 2017 in Riverview Baptist Church at Ripplemead with Pastor Shahn Wilburn officiating. Burial will follow in Angels Rest Memory Gardens at Narrows. The family will receive friends at the church from 9 until 11 am before the services.
